The decades-long conflict is known to have left the country teeming with millions of landmines, unexploded weapons and other explosive remnants of war that can still kill or injure dozens of people each year.

Cambodia, with encouragement from other countries, has spent years sterilizing soil from explosives, but it is a difficult and risky job. It was in this atmosphere that Magawa entered. Magawa was trained by the non-governmental organization APOPO.

The organization, founded in Belgium and headquartered in Tanzania, trains rats like Magawa to detect the smell of explosive chemicals used in landmines and to show it to its handlers.

Magawa has a large body but is still quite light so that he doesn’t want to have the chance to detonate landmines while he is walking over it.

Magawa has created 39 landmines and 28 unexploded weaponry items. His work is helping to clear a zone of nearly 35 hectares of land from military materials at risk.

“Magawa is a hero mouse. We are very happy to commemorate his life-saving service by earning him the PDSA gold medal. This PDSA Gold Medal is part of the highest Animal Award program for extraordinary courage and dedication to civilian life.

Magawa acquired the expertise through rigorous training just before his conclusion was sent to Cambodia. He is trained to ignore messy scrap metal, and give signals to the handler when he finds out the proper position of landmines.

He was so quick to create landmines that he could sterilize a zone the size of a tennis court in 30 minutes. When tested by humans, it takes 4 days using a metal detector.

For any landmines or unexploded remains he finds, he eliminates the risk of death or serious injury in a position that has faced significant hardship.

Cambodia has the highest number of amputees in the world, with 25,000 people adrift of unexploded weapons.

Cambodia has recorded 64,840 fatalities due to mines or other explosives, for the Cambodia Mine Action and Victims Authority.

Some countries dropped unexploded weaponry on all of Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos during the Vietnam War. Moreover, the United States dropped 2.7 million tons of weaponry – including bombs
